PDF Does Not Display In Google Chrome (Plugin Not Available)

Google Chrome is officially dropping support for NPAPI plugins.  Unfortunately this includes all versions of Adobe Reader.  Adobe does not have any plans to update it's plugin technology in order to conform to today's security standards and has announced that "To view PDF files in Adobe Acrobat Reader DC, we recommend that you download the file in Chrome and open it from your desktop."  However there is a workaround that should be effective until sometime this September where Google Chrome will remove the ability to allow NPAPI plugins all together.  Here are some short instructions on how to configure Google Chrome to display documents in browser while we work towards a more permanent solution.  Alternatively, viewing the PDF in another browser such as Internet Explorer or Firefox should work as well.

  • Open Google Chrome and enter the following into the address bar without quotes and press enter: "chrome://flags/#enable-npapi"
  • Click to Enable NPAPI as seen below:
  • Close Google Chrome and then open it back up again.
  • Type the following into the address bar without quotes and press enter: "chrome://plugins/"
  • Make sure that ChromePDF Viewer is DISABLED and Adobe Reader is ENABLED as seen below:
  • Now try viewing the PDF document again.
